DailyMed –— a database search engine from the National Library of Medicine — is my go-to free resource for searching official FDA drug labels and package inserts. Simply type in the medication name, active ingredient, or NDC code to pull up the most current prescribing information, including indications, dosages, side effects, interactions, and critical Black Box Warnings (the FDA’s strongest safety alerts). I was shocked when I discovered — right in this database — that a drug I had been given during my cancer journey carried a Black Box Warning for a risk of nearly immediate death, something no one had ever mentioned to me. I am sure I came very close to becoming a victim of that warning. I check everything myself now. I also found that copying the drug’s DailyMed link and pasting it into a large language model AI lets you dig deeper and keeps the AI focused on the information that allowed the drug to be approved in the first place: What was the drug’s original intended use? What’s the evidence it actually helps? What are the real consequences? Armed with this information, you can make truly informed, thoughtful decisions about what you put in your body.
